Seven Hills Literary Contest and Penumbra Poetry and Haiku Contest

NOTE: Usually the admissions period runs from June 1st to August 31st. Due to some unanticipated issues with getting the contest posted on it's regular venue, we are extending the submissions date to September 16th. If you had intended to get something in to one of our several genre competitions, there is still time to do so.


The Seven Hills Literary Contest is in its twenty-forth year. Penumbra is in its thirtieth year. Winners are published in the Seven Hills Review the following year, usually By the end of March.

All judging is blind by professional, published authors.

 Seven Hills Literary Contest Rules (Prose entries)
Deadline: September 16th  2018 (Midnight)

  1.  Contest does not accept work previously published or having received awards in other competitions. Notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.
  2. DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS ON THE MANUSCRIPTS YOU UPLOAD. Remember to remove your name from headers. Names or identifying information will disqualify your manuscript.
  3.  Entries exceeding maximum word counts are disqualified.
  4.  Format all manuscripts in 12 point type, Times Roman font with 1 inch margins. Optional header information: Title and (page) of (pages)
  5. The cover letter is not a necessity. IF your submission is selected for publication, we will need a 250-300 word bio. NOT a listing of your prior winners or publications.
  • $100 first place winners, $75 second, and $50 third
  • Plus publication in the Seven Hills Review and one complimentary copy


Contest Categories

All categories; No adult only content. Adult content submissions will be rejected.  Remember, judging is blind. Author's name posted in the document will be a cause for rejection.

  • Short Story: 3,000 word maximum, any genre.
  • Creative Nonfiction: 2,500 word maximum. Submissions in this genre could include (but are not limited to) memoir, food or travel writing, personal essays, new journalism, biography, nonfiction stories, and nature writing. The emphasis in creative nonfiction is on factually true yet elegant literary expression.
  • Children's Picture Books: 1,000 words, no pictures, text only.
  • Young Adult Novel: Submit a 3,000 word (maximum) excerpt of a young adult novel's first pages plus a 100 word (or less) synopsis that is included at  the beginning of the document. 
  • Adult Novel Excerpt: Submit a 3,000 word (maximum) excerpt of a an adult novel's first pages. Any genre. Please add a 150 word (or less) plot synopsis at  the beginning of the document.

Above categories submission fee is $15 for TWA members and $20 for non-members

  • Flash Fiction: 500 word maximum, any genre.

Flash Fictioni submission fee is $13 for TWA members and $15 for non-members


Penumbra Poetry Contest
Deadline: September 16th, 2018 (Midnight)

DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS ON THE MANUSCRIPTS YOU UPLOAD. Remember to remove your name from headers. Names or identifying information will disqualify your entry.

  All submissions will be the original work of the contestant, unpublished in any form, including electronically, and not  accepted for publication elsewhere.

  There is no limit to the number of entries. All skill levels welcome.

  Up to 50 lines, any style or subject; line length may be edited to fit 6x9 publication format.
Prizes: $100, $75, $50; Winners and honorable mentions, if any, are published in the Seven Hills Review and mailed a complimentary copy.


Penumbra Poetry Entries:
1. All submissions will be electronically submitted, through submittable.com, formatted for 8½ x 11 paper, black Times-New Roman font 12-point, single-spaced with no identifying names or marks, including, but not limited to, illustrations and borders. No audio or video will be accepted. No website insertions. One submission per page as a separate attachment.
2. Each poem will be submitted as a separate attachment. Submission fee: $10 non-members, $8 TWA members with paid dues per poem.
3. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in disqualification.

  Judging: Judges are published, recognized poets.

 Haiku Contest

 Deadline: September 16th, 2018

 DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS ON THE MANUSCRIPTS YOU UPLOAD. Remember to remove your name from headers. Names or identifying information disqualify your manuscript.

  All submissions will be the original work of the contestant, unpublished in any form, including electronically, not under consideration or accepted for publication.
There is no limit to the number of entries. All skill levels welcome.

  3-line haiku need not conform to strict syllable count.
Prizes: $50, $35, $20.

  Winners and honorable mentions, if any, are published in the Seven Hills Review and mailed a complimentary copy.

 
Entries:
1.   Judging: Judges are published, recognized haiku experts.

 
Winners of all contests will be notified and posted on the TWA website by December 2018 at www.twaonline.org
