Seven Hills Literary Contest and Penumbra Poetry and Haiku Contest

The Seven Hills Literary Contest is in its twenty-fifth year. Penumbra is in its thirty-second year. Winners are published in the Seven Hills Review the following year, usually by the end of March. Please read and heed all the rules for your submission category.

All judging is blind by professional, published authors.

 Seven Hills Literary Contest Rules (Prose entries)
Deadline: August 31,  2019 (Midnight)

  1.  Contest does not accept work previously published or having received awards in other competitions. Notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.
  2. PLEASE  DO NOT   PUT YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS ON THE MANUSCRIPTS YOU UPLOAD. Remember to remove your name from headers. Names or identifying information will disqualify your manuscript.
  3.  Entries exceeding maximum word counts are disqualified.
  4.  Format all manuscripts in 12 point type, Times Roman font with 1 inch margins. Optional header information: Title and (page) of (pages)
  5. The cover letter is not a necessity. IF your submission is selected for publication, we will need a 250-300 word bio. NOT a listing of your prior winners or publications.
  • $100 first place winners, $75 second, and $50 third
  • Plus publication in the Seven Hills Review and one complimentary copy


Contest Categories

All categories; No adult only content. Adult content submissions will be rejected.  Remember, judging is blind. Author's name posted in the document will be a cause for rejection.

  • Short Story: 3,000 word maximum, any genre.
  • Creative Nonfiction: 2,500 word maximum. Submissions in this genre could include (but are not limited to) memoir, food or travel writing, personal essays, new journalism, biography, nonfiction stories, and nature writing. The emphasis in creative nonfiction is on factually true yet elegant literary expression.
  • Children's Chapter Books: 1,000 words, no pictures, text only.
  • Young Adult Novel: Submit a 3,000 word (maximum) excerpt of a young adult novel's first pages plus a 100 word (or less) synopsis that is included at  the beginning of the document. 
  • Adult Novel Excerpt: Submit a 3,000 word (maximum) excerpt of a an adult novel's first pages. Any genre. Please add a 150 word (or less) plot synopsis at  the beginning of the document.

           Above categories submission fee is $15 for TWA members and $20 for non-members

  • Ten Minute Play:   A ten minute play has no maximum word length, it is a scene or generally one act play the runs on stage in ten minutes or less.   • Flash Fiction: 500 word maximum, any genre.

           Flash Fiction submission fee is $13 for TWA members and $15 for non-members

  • 10 Minute Play: 10 Minutes, seriously. No cheating!

           10-Minute Play submission fee is $10 for TWA members and $12 for non-members

Penumbra Poetry Contest

  There is no limit to the number of entries. All skill levels welcome. However, each poem or Haiku counts as one entry. If more than one poem or haiku per entry submitted, judges will be directed to consider only the first. 

  Up to 50 lines, any style or subject; line length may be edited to fit 6x9 publication format. For proper line spacing, please try to understand that your longer lines may be subject to wrapping.
Prizes: $100, $75, $50; Winners and honorable mentions, if any, are published in the Seven Hills Review and mailed a complimentary copy.


Penumbra Poetry Entries:
1. All submissions will be electronically submitted, through Submittable.com, formatted for 8½ x 11 paper, black Times-New Roman font 12-point, single-spaced with no identifying names or marks, including, but not limited to, illustrations and borders. No audio or video will be accepted. No website insertions. One submission per page as a separate attachment.
2. Each poem will be submitted as a separate attachment. Submission fee: $10 non-members, $8 TWA members with paid dues per poem.
3. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in disqualification.

  Judging: Judges are published, recognized poets.

 Haiku Contest

 Deadline: August 31, 2019

 DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS ON THE MANUSCRIPTS YOU UPLOAD. Remember to remove your name from headers. Names or identifying information disqualify your manuscript.

  All submissions will be the original work of the contestant, unpublished in any form, including electronically, not under consideration or accepted for publication.
There is no limit to the number of entries. All skill levels welcome.

  3-line Haiku form should conform to the 5-7-5 syllable format.
Prizes: $50, $35, $20.

  Winners and honorable mentions, if any, are published in the Seven Hills Review and mailed a complimentary copy.

 
Poetry and Haiku Entries:

The synopsis should state the genre (horror, historical, romance, etc.) to the judges have an idea what the writer wants to achieve. 12pt. Times New Roman, 1.5 to 2x Spaced. PDF or MSWord formats

Submit a 3,000 word (maximum) excerpt of a young adult novel (first pages please) plus a 150 word (or less) synopsis at the end of the excerpt. The synopsis should state the genre (horror, historical, romance, etc.) so the judges have an idea what the writer wants to achieve.  The typical Y/A novel is written for ages ranging from twelve years up to the age of eighteen and features a teen or young adult protagonist. Judging is blind. 12pt. Times New Roman, 1.5 to 2x Spaced.

Children’s Chapter Books or short stories are targeted toward children ages 6-12.  If geared toward the 6-8 age range, the pieces should use simple vocabulary that the child could read with some assistance from parents.  If geared from 9-12, children should be able to read the material on their own.  Submit a 2,500 word (maximum) excerpt plus a 100 word (or less) synopsis. No illustrations. Judging is blind.

There is no limit to the number of entries however, each entry shall include only one poem. If multiple poems are submitted in one entry, only the first will be judged.

Three-line poem. Strict adherence to three line, 5 - 7 - 5 syllable count required. 

Multiple entries encouraged, but each is a separate submission. If multiple Haiku are submitted in an entry, only the first will be judged. Poetry, if done in Haiku form, should be submitted in Poetry.

Titles are not included in Haiku for judging, but can be used for identification.
